    Description

Abner Doubleday Autograph Letter Signed "A. Doubleday." One page, 5" x 7.75", "Hd Qrs 2d Brig 1st Div 1 Cav," January 15, 1863, to General Marsena R. Patrick, Provost Marshal General of the Army of the Potomac. Spending the winter months at the headquarters of III Corps at Falmouth, Virginia, Doubleday writes: "The enclosed letter Maj. Genl [David] Hunter would like to have forwarded across the river by the next flag of truce, if there be no official obstacles in the way." Minor smudging of ink and lightly soiled folds. Mounted to a backing sheet to an overall size of 5.5" x 8.25".

    More Information:

Doubleday was a career soldier who had served in the Mexican and Seminole Wars before the Civil War. Second in command at Fort Sumter at the beginning of the war, he played an important role at Gettysburg where he fought off ten Confederate brigades with 9,500 men, while in command of I Corps, Army of the Potomac. He is most famous, however, for erroneously being credited in 1907 with the invention of baseball, a claim he never made in life.
