Abigail Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 9.75", Albany, September 21, 1848. Two years before her husband Millard was elected the thirteenth president of the United States, Abigail Fillmore thanks photographer and engraver "E[dward]. Anthony" of New York for a miniature engraving of her husband. In full:

"On my return from the West yesterday, I was presented with a beautiful miniature engraving of my husband, Millard Fillmore, from yourself, for which you will please accept my sincere thanks.

I consider it an excellent likeness, by far the best I have seen, and shall preserve it as a cherished memento of the original."

Edward Anthony, a daguerreian artist, opened his business, E. Anthony and Company, on Broadway Avenue in New York in 1847. Anthony's most lucrative business, though, came from producing and selling engravings based on his daguerreotypes.

Abigail and Millard married in 1826, settled in New York, and had two children. Four months after his swearing-in as vice president in 1849, President Zachary Taylor's death propelled the fifty-year-old Millard and fifty-one-year-old Abigail into the White House. Twenty-six days after leaving Washington in March 1853, the first lady died of pneumonia. This letter has minor stains and smoothed folds.
