A Teetotaling Tyler needs more whiskey!

John Tyler (1790-1862), President, Autograph Letter Signed "John Tyler" two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Sherwood Forest, Ch[arle]s City C[our]t House, February 9, 1858, to Colonel Ware. He writes in part: "I am about to ask a favour of you the granting of which will I trust, give you but slight trouble. I obtained in 1844 through your friendly agency, two barrels of Whiskey of Lt. Richardson. It is due to truth to say that all my visitors from that time to this have drank and sung its praises, and it has been so great a favorite, that it has shared the fate of most other favorites and has been almost all consumed by kindness. The last carton is all that now remains of it. Now my Dr. Sir I wish not only to replenish my stock but to procure a supply for an esteemed friend and neighbour, and should therefore like to get 4 barrels of it. Can you do this for me. It was and is called Richardson's Old whiskey and I should like it to be the same veritable stuff... Perhaps the stock is nearly run out, if so I should be glad to receive two barrels or even one. I am like yourself a de facto temperance man never drinking spirituous liquors myself, but my numerous visitors would scarcely agree to be placed upon the same list..." Neatly tipped along the left margin to larger sheet bearing a bust engraving of Tyler, else fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
