1861 Autograph Letter From the Governor of Ohio to President Abraham Lincoln Regarding Militia Call Ups. One page, 5" x 7.25", on State of Ohio letterhead, Columbus, April 15, 1861, in ink, to "Hon A Lincoln", Washington. In April, 1861 President Abraham Lincoln called on the governors of every state to contribute troops totaling 75,000 to recapture forts, protect the capital and "preserve the union". In this important letter from Ohio governor William Dennison can be seen the enthusiasm and willingness for states to contribute men to the cause and so preserve the union. Dennison writes: "What portion of the 75,000 Militia you call for do you give to Ohio. We will provide the largest number you will receive. Great rejoicing here over your Proclamation. W. Dennison". Dennison adds: "Answer immediately. I await your answer to issue my proclamation." In the end Ohio raised 25 volunteer infantry regiments - fully 10 more than the requested quota. This letter provides an historical record of the Union's effort to raise men to conduct the war; ironically, four years to the day this letter was telegraphed, President Lincoln would be assassinated. This important letter would be a significant addition to any Civil War or Lincoln collector. There is an area where the ink has feathered slightly, two very small holes at the top left margin, some soiling, else the letter is in very good condition. From the collection of Henry E. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
