[William Bryan] Ledger Accounts for the Republic of Texas, 1836-1842. Four pages,10" x 19", n.p., 1836-1842. This delicate document, being two leaves removed from a ledger book, is titled: "Republic of Texas in account Current with William Bryan, late Government Agent," and outlines some of the debts owed to Bryan by the Republic over the course of eight years, for items such as "Navy Supplies, Sundry disbursements on account of the Navy . . . Medical Stores for the army," and so on. Unfortunately for William Bryan, the Texas government never provided the necessary funds to pay outstanding bills, so Bryan was compelled to borrow cash or use his own capital to delay bill collectors and attempt to maintain good credit. He was eventually paid back primarily in land scrip, which he later sold, often at a loss.

Texas merchant and ardent supporter of the Texas cause, William Bryan was an enormous help to the young Republic, which lacked the resources needed to conduct a long, vigorous war against Mexico. Bryan helped by providing financial assistance, supplies, and services such as transporting and outfitting volunteers and chartering and fitting out vessels for the Texas Navy, through his Texas mercantile firm. On January 14, 1836, he was appointed general agent for Texas in New Orleans, but after a few months of providing goods and services to Texas, mostly on credit, he began to realize that Texas and his business would not be able to meet their financial commitments because no cash was coming from the government or Texas commissioners. Document shows age toning, with chips and creases at edges. Paper loss at fold intersections and moderate horizontal fold separation. Good condition.
