[Will C. Barnes] ALS to Adolf Sutro on Arizona Ranch Letterhead. In this letter, dated April 29, 1897, on two 8.5" x 10.875" sheets of letterhead of The Esperanza Cattle Company, Phoenix, Arizona, Barnes writes to Adolf Sutro (1830-1898), a San Francisco businessman and entrepreneur, who served as mayor of San Francisco from 1894 to 1896. Sutro used his wealth to build public works, including the Sutro Baths, a complex that included a large swimming pool, a skating rink, and a museum for the people of San Francisco. Will C. Barnes (1858-1936) was an author, soldier, rancher, state legislator, and a long-time employee of the U.S. Forest Service. He won the Medal of Honor in 1882 for his gallantry in the Battle of Fort Apache in 1881. In this letter, Barnes offers Sutro "some curios that we have in our stock and which may be of interest to you in connection with your Museum," including prehistoric pottery, mountain lion skins, two mummies of babies "found in as cliff dwelling in Northern Arizona," and a "dozen live Gila Monsters." Not only is the letter interesting in terms of content, but it offers a fine example of letterhead of a late-nineteenth-century cattle company, which includes the cattle and horse brands used owned by the company. The letter is in fine condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
