Description

[Warren G. Harding] Presidential Appointment Signed by Edwin Denby, Secretary of the Navy Washington, D.C., December 21, 1922, 14.5" x 18.5" document appointing Rudolph Owen a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Navy. Secretary of the Navy Framed, minor creases, toning and wear, else near fine.

    More Information:

Edwin Denby was authorized by President Harding to transfer control of federal oil reserves from the Navy to the Department of the Interior, whose secretary, Albert Fall, leased them to oil company executives in exchange for bribes and personal loans. The resulting Teapot Dome Scandal (named after the location of one of the reserves in Wyoming) forced both Denby and Fall to resign and created endless turmoil for Harding, who is reported to have said, "I have no trouble with my enemies, but my damn friends, they're the ones that keep me walking the floor nights!" The illegal activities of his cronies proved too much for Harding, who became ill and died of a stroke and/or heart attack on August 2, 1923. The fallout from Teapot Dome continued long after his demise.
