    Description

[War of 1812]. James Madison and James Monroe Letter of Marque Signed. One partially-printed page, 14.5" x 11.25" (sight), Washington, July 9, 1812, authorizing the "private armed Schooner called the Dolphin of the burthen of one hundred sixty one tons, or thereabouts, owned by Michael M. Blair John Hollins John Smith Hollins Samuel Taylor Samuel Smith & James A. Buchanan mounting ten carriage guns, and navigated by a hundred men" to sail as a commissioned privateer to "subdue, seize and take any armed or unarmed British vessel, public or private, which shall be found within the jurisdictional limits of the United States or elsewhere on the high seas, or within the waters of the British dominions." Madison signs as president and Monroe as secretary of state. Original paper seal of the United States at lower left. Matted and framed to an overall size of 24" x 20".

During the War of 1812, the United States lacked a standing navy. To remedy this quickly, the government issued letters of marque and reprisal which authorized private ships to attack and seize British ships and their cargo.

Condition: Folds; .5" (sight) tear at the intersection of the left vertical fold (third from the left) and the horizontal fold. Paper loss at the upper edge of the right vertical fold (third from the right). Two large spots of water staining, one of which touches the signatures of Madison and Monroe with fading to the "J" in Madison's signature. Ghosting near the upper left and lower right corners from the seal. Additional spot of staining near the lower right corner.
