    Description

[Tokyo Trials]. Second World War Japanese Prisoners of War Scroll. Similar to the Nuremberg Trials being held in Germany, the International Military Tribunal of the Far East, or Tokyo Trials, was convened in April, 1946, to prosecute high ranking Japanese for three types of war crimes: conspiracy to start and wage war; crimes against humanity; and planning, ordering, authorizing, or failing to prevent such crimes in the higher levels of command. The trial was held in the War Ministry office in Tokyo and twenty-eight government officials and military commanders (and one political philosopher) were tried. In all, six of the accused were sentenced to death and he remaining defendants were given life sentences with the exception of Mamoru Shigemitsu, who received a seven year prison sentence.

Measuring 21.75" x 71.5", printed on cloth with wooden scroll bars, twenty-five of the prisoners tried in the Tokyo Trials are listed. The scroll is dedicated "To Lieutenant Herbert J. Herring/With many thanks and compliments" and dated January 12, 1948, three months before the trial convened. The prisoners listed include: Kiichuro Hiranuma, former Prime Minister; Jiro Minami, war minister and governor-general of Korea; Sadao Araki, war minister; Koki Hirota, former prime minister, hanged in December, 1948; Shunroku Hata, field marshal; Kumiaki Koiso, prime minister and governor-general of Korea; Yoshijiro Umeza, war minister ; Kenji Doihara, chief of the intelligence service in Manchukuo and commander of the air force, hanged in December, 1948; Shigetaro Shimada, admiral and naval minister; Hideki Tojo, army general and prime minister throughout most of the war, he was responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, hanged in December, 1948; Seishiro Itegaki, general and war minister, hanged in December, 1948; Hiroshi Oshima, ambassador to Germany; Toshio Shiratori, ambassador to Italy; Heitaro Kimura, commander of the Burma Expeditionary Force, hanged in December, 1948; Teiichi Suzuki, president of the Cabinet Planning Board; Okinori Kaya, finance minister; Koichi Kido, Keeper of the Privy Seal; Takazumi Oka, chief of the Bureau of Naval Affairs; Kingoro Hashimoto, army colonel and founder of Sakurakai; Naoki Hoshino, chief cabinet secretary; Mamoru Shigemitsu, foreign minister; Akira Muto, commander of the Philippines Expeditionary Force, hanged in December, 1948; Kenryo Sato, chief of the Military Affairs Bureau; Shigenori Toga, foreign minister, died in prison in 1949; and Iwane Matsui, commander of the Shanghai Expeditionary Force and Central China Area Army, hanged in December, 1948.

The scroll is separating from the top bar in several places and has caused the cloth to fray, but this does not affect the text at all. A fantastic piece commemorating an event that is often overshadowed by the trial at Nuremberg.
