    More Information:

As acting secretary war, William Cooke (1808-1847) instructs Nathaniel Watrous to report to Henry Daingerfield in Washington "for the purpose of assisting him in completing and forwarding the contracts for the Army which he was directed to make." Instructions are given, including a list of articles and method of payment.  Cooke concludes, "Let no exertion be spared to forward the supplies with dispatch as the welfare of the army depends greatly upon them."

Cooke came to Texas with the New Orleans Greys in 1835 in time to participate in the Siege of Bexar. At the time of this letter, he was serving as quartermaster general of the Republic. Later in 1840, he helped build the military road from the Brazos River to the Red River.
