Texas Ranger Captain Hughes Tries to Sway an Election

[Texas Rangers]. John R. Hughes Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, measuring 8.5" x 11", on personalized John R. Hughes, Captain/Headquarters Co. "D."/State Rangers letterhead, October 28, 1896, Ysleta, Texas, to H. Bowles of Uvalde, Texas. The esteemed Texas Ranger writes to Mr. Bowles concerning Ben Peterson trying to sway an upcoming senate election away from favoring popular candidate W.W. Tinney. In part: "While I think a great deal of Ben, I think if he is doing this he is making a great mistake. It is talked at El Paso by the Gamblors that Tinny wants to go to the Senate for the purpose of making a law to make gambling a felony, and I went and talked to Tinney about that and he said it was not so, that the present law is good enough if it was enforced...I wish you would tell Henry Baylor about it and see what you can both do in the election for Tinney. I think he is sure to be elected but we ought to help the best man all we can. I don't know any thing about his opponent but I do know that Tinney is a good man. Any thing I can do for you and Henry in this range let me know and I will be with you. Yours truly, John R. Hughes"

Condition: Smoothed folds, even toning, with a chip on both pages at the top-right edge, and a .5" area of separation at the middle-right.
