Description

A Frontier Ranger is discharged from service

[Texas Rangers]. Captain Jiles S. Boggess Discharge Document Signed. One partially-printed page, 7.5" x 6.75", Fort Chadbourne [Coke County, Texas], March 22, 1855, honorably discharging a private from Company "A," Texas Mounted Volunteers. Reading in part:

"Know Ye, That Saml. J. McElrath a Private of Jiles S. Boggess' company (A.) of Texas Mounted Volunteers who was enrolled on the 23d day of December 1854 to serve for the term of three months in a campaign against the Comanche Indians, is hereby honorably discharged from the service of the United States . . . by reason of being mustered out of service on the expiration of his term."

The discharge lists the private's physical characteristics and occupation (farmer). He wasn't the only Ranger discharged that day-the whole company mustered out according to the terms of expiration. Nevertheless documents of any type related to the service of the Frontier Rangers rarely surface. The mustering officer and Boggess as captain have signed this document.

Captain Jiles [sometimes "Giles"] Boggess (1827-1877) emigrated from Tennessee to Texas in 1850. He began his command of Company "A" in November 1854. After serving as a Confederate throughout the Civil War, he returned home to operate a saloon. This document contains several areas of discoloration, though the text is easily legible. A few small holes exist at fold intersections.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
