[Sam Houston] 1894 Certified Copy of Sam Houston's 1863 Estate List. Three pages on lined paper, 8.5" x 14", March 13, 1894, Huntsville, Texas. This "Certified Copy of The inventory & appraisment of The Estate of Sam. Houston" was transcribed in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas, the home of Sam Houston and the location of present-day Sam Houston State University. Houston, who served Texas in various capacities, died in Huntsville on July 26, 1863, two years after being evicted from the governor's office. This appraisement is headed with the following: "Inventory and appraisment of the Estate of Sam Houston made this 2nd day of December 1863, by Thomas Caruthers Executor, and by B M Hague, H. M. Watkins & John McCreary Appraisors."

Listed under "Credits belonging to said Estate" is one page of the values of notes, drafts, and receipts for claims. On the second page are listed twelve slaves and their values, including "Joshua" (valued at $2000), the father of Samuel Walker Houston, a prominent African-American education pioneer. Page two further lists the values of buggies, firearms, cattle, and many acres of land in the Texas counties of Walker, Chambers, Liberty, Orange, Henderson, Robertson, Anderson, Houston, Calhoun, and McLennan. This certified copy includes an embossed Walker County seal and some penciled annotations added later. Toned with folds (separation at some folds) with some foxing. Fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
