President Pierce appoints Neighbors as "Special Agent for the Indians in Texas"

[Robert S. Neighbors]. Franklin Pierce Indian Agent Appointment Signed, One partly-printed vellum page, 15.5" x 11", Washington, D.C., April 18, 1853, appointing Texas Ranger Robert Neighbors "to be Special Agent for the Indians in Texas." Countersigned by Secretary of State William L. Marcy. President Pierce's signature is particularly large and bold. Document contains a large blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner.

Robert Neighbors (1815-1859) was an important figure in Texas during the 1840s and 1850s. During the 1840s, he served as a Ranger under Jack Hays and began his career as an Indian Agent (1845). By the 1850s, he had become the leading Texas authority on Indian affairs, working closely with Rangers such as Rip Ford. Since he was a Democrat, the new Whig president in 1849 - Zachary Taylor-replaced him as agent, but Democrat Franklin Pierce, only weeks after beginning his term in 1853, reappointed Neighbors. Six years after receiving this appointment, Neighbors, who held controversial views on Indians, was assassinated.
