[Revolutionary War Soldier's Wife]. Eunice Rebeckah Eaton Autograph Petition Signed. One page, 8" x 12.5", Sudbury, "State of Massachusetts Bay," March 14, 1780. Eunice, the wife of an American Revolutionary War soldier, petitions the "Honourable House of Representatives" to compel the local committee of selectmen to pay part of her husband's army wages. (Her husband was Sergeant Uriah Eaton, "who is Ingaged During the war in one of the fifteen Battallion Raised for the Defence of the United States from April 1777 and yet continues in the Continental Service.") According to the petition, the Massachusetts' House of Representatives had earlier "made Provision for the wives and families of the Continental Non Commissioned officers and private Soldiers who Belonged to this State by applying to the Committees of Select Men . . . and paying the One Half of their Husbands Monthly Wages." Unfortunately as Eunice agues, she had been "Refused because my Husband was Returned by Sudbury and also By Worcester as a Soldier for their Respective Town . . . Both committees Neglect or Refuse to supply me and my Family agreeable to the Honourable Assembly's Resolve." Docketing on the verso. Toned paper with minor dampstaining and other stains. Weaknesses exist along the folds with some very small tears along the right edge.
