    [Revolutionary War]. 1776 Enlistment Oath of Allegiance. Two pages (recto and verso), 7.75" x 12.75", Newport [Rhode Island], April 28, 1776. The oath reads in part, "We the subscribers hereby solemnly engage and enlist our selves as Soldiers in [?] pay of the Colony of Rhode Island for the preservation of the Liberties of America and the Defence of the United Colonies in General and of this Colony in Particular From the Day of our Enlistment for one year only. . . . We Hereby Promise to Submit our selves to all the orders and Regulations of the Army and Faithfully to observe and obey all Such orders as We shall Receive from time to time from our Officers." The oath is followed by ten signatures (three are "X" marks). One signature has been struck through. Beside each name is the date they took the oath (all dated between April and June 1776). On the verso are eight receipt entries for "pay as a soldier." All are dated April 1776 through June 1776 and issued to eight of the ten names listed under the oath. Weakness at the smoothed folds; one corner has detached along the folds.
