Description[Republic of Texas] William Fairfax Gray Partially Printed Signed Land Deed. Two pages, front and verso, 8" x 10.75", October 9, 1839, Harrisburg County, Republic of Texas. The deed transfers "one league and one labor" of land from J. Robert Dunn to John R. Higginbotham for the sum of $1600. The document is signed by Robert Dunn, F. W. [Sivete], and W. F. Gray. In 1839 Harrisburg County was renamed Harris County. Toning, edge chipping, weakness at folds, and tape repairs, thus good.
William Fairfax Gray attended the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos and kept a faithful record of the convention's proceedings. His diary was published in 1909 under the title of From Virginia to Texas, 1835. In 1837 he moved his family to Texas and settled in Houston. In addition to practicing law, he served as clerk of the Texas House of Representatives from May 2 to September 26, 1837, and as secretary of the Senate from April 9 to May 24, 1838. On May 13, 1840, Gray was appointed district attorney. Upon the establishment of the Texas Supreme Court, he was named clerk of the court.
