[Republic of Texas]. Sam Houston Autograph Letter Signed as the first president of the Republic of Texas. Two pages of a bifolium, 8" x 9.75", Washington, February 19, 1837. President Houston wrote this letter only four months after his inauguration as the Republic's first president asking Colonel H[enderson] Yoakum to sell some "papers" for an unnamed lady. Houston's signature, as well as the entire letter itself, is written in a large hand with dark, bold ink. The signature includes his large paraph. Age toned and mostly clean paper. Four small filing holes don't affect the text.

"See if any thing can be done with these papers. If you can make any thing the Lady says she will give the half to you. Do what you think best, and she will be satisfied. Write to her, when you think proper. I thank for your letter of the 2nd Instant and will try soon and answer it. The papers I send you today will do it in part. Salute Lady and family for me. Truly thy Friend [signed] Sam Houston."

Houston and Henderson King Yoakum were friends for many years. An attorney, historian, and writer, Yoakum moved from Tennessee to Texas in 1845, years after receiving this letter. The two later served on the board of Austin College in Huntsville, Yoakum's adopted hometown. Houston is thought to have contributed to Yoakum's two-volume History of Texas from Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846. Yoakum County is the namesake of the colonel.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
