[Reconstruction]. Alfred H. Terry: Three Autograph Letters Signed. Alfred Howe Terry, a Union general who had seen action at First Manassas, Petersburg, and Fort Fisher, was appointed as the last military governor of the Third Military District beginning December 22, 1869. The first letter, dated just after Terry has taken up his post as governor is addressed to Gen. Thomas Ruger, serving with the 18th U. S. Infantry, two pages, 5.5" x 8.5", Atlanta, December 28, 1869, regarding the murder of a black man by a policeman. He writes, in full: "I understand that the examination of the policeman who killed the negro at the barracks will take place before Mr. Smith a magistrate at 2 o ck to day. Have the witnesses from the barracks been summoned? If they have not been I would send them in anyway. Please make a full report of the matter to me stating all the circumstances & especially those which placed in danger people belonging to the garrison." Folds, very slight toning. The second letter is marked "Confidential" and is also addressed to Gen. Ruger, one and one-half pages, 5.5" x 8.5", Atlanta, December 29 [1869], regarding a secret mission. He writes, in full: "I wish to send of [sic] a party of one officer & six men to morrow morning on confidential duty. Will you be so kind as to select one of your most discreet & trustworthy Lieutenants & send him in to see me this morning. The party will have to leave by rail at 8 o'ck to morrow." Folds. The following month, General Terry would conduct what would become known as "Terry's Purge". All ex-Confederates were removed from the General Assembly and replaced with Republican candidates; in addition, all black legislators that had been expelled were reinstated. This letter is likely written in preparation for these actions.
The third, also to Gen. Ruger, one page, 5.5" x 8.5", Atlanta, January 10 [1870], warning of possible trouble in the city. In full: "Put one hundred men under arms and keep them ready to move at a moments notice. I do not think that there will be any need of them, but there is a good deal of excitement in town, and we must be prepared for any eventuality." Folds, light toning at the edges.
