Description[Queen Anne]. Printed "Burgers Oath." One page, 6.25" x 11.5", July 7, 1587, "to be sworn by all Burgesses of Gild, and Craftsmen of the Burgh of Aberdeen the time of their Admission. . . . to adhere to, and maintain the true Reformed Protestant Religion, denying the Heresies of Popery, and Quakerism. . . ." Affixed to a paperboard.
The oath was made law in 1702 by the Aberdeen town council, which intended to punish Quakers and Roman Catholics. In 1710, Queen Anne attended a council meeting which decided to remove the parts of the oath which offended Quakers.
