[Pope Innocent X]. Gaudin, Sieur de Bailliere Autograph Letter Signed. A fair copy in a secretarial hand, three pages of a bifolium, 8.5" x 12", circa 1648. The letter, written entirely in French, relays the information that the Pope is against the Barberini, and gives details concerning the same. Within are referenced Jacques de Perron, the treasurer to the Queen of England, Cromwell, Sieur de Romanwille, Louis XIII, as well as the Archbishop of Seeg. In the latter part of the letter, Gaudin provides a long list of the distribution of the benefices.

Born Giovanni Battista Pamphili, he was elected to succeed Urban VIII. He owed his promotion to the Barberini who soon became his enemies after his election. The Jansenist controversy having made a great commotion in the Church, Innocent appointed a commission of cardinals to settle it. In 1653 he issued a papal bull (Cum occasione) in which he condemned the five propositions of Jansen. Historian opinions differ widely as to the character of this pontiff, but agree he was one of the more politically astute. After his death in 1655, he was succeeded by Alexander VII.
