[Pirate Richard Clarke/Penn vs. Baltimore Dispute]. Autograph John Seymour Letter Signed. "Jo: Seymour." Three pages, bifolium, 7.25" x 12", docketed on the verso, duplicate, Maryland, October 7, 1707. Fascinating letter to the Board of Trade, from colonial governor of Maryland, John Seymour, making mention of the heinous Maryland pirate Richard Clarke, and the then-ongoing border dispute between William Penn and Charles Calvert, Baron of Baltimore.Seymour's update on the hunt for Clarke, who was arrested for forgery and tobacco tampering before turning to piracy, reads in part: "we have apprehended and convicted Some of Richard Clarkes accomplices, yet himself and other associates Still keeping out...Some other Villains have committed unheard of Barbaritys in robbing the Indian Monuments." The governor goes on to urgently plead for assistance from the Crown, regarding the growing unease in the Penn vs. Lord Baltimore land dispute: "My Lord. There will be an absolute necessity for her Majesty's determining the Bounds of Pennsylvania and Maryland, The two provinces being ready to cut throats about their Lymitts, yet hope I have at present put a Stopp to any further Breach untill her Majesty's Pleasure be known therein." The conflict over colonial borders would last until 1769, about eighty-five years after it originally began.
