Tsar Alexander I Letter to Napoleon congratulating him on his wedding to Marie Louise of Austria

[Napoleon]. Tsar Alexander I of Russia Letter Signed with French translation. One page of a bifolium, 9" x 14.25", St. Petersburg, May 18, 1810, in Russian. Included is the French translation (also one page of a 9" x 14.25" bifolium). In this letter, Alexander congratulates Napoleon on his marriage to Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria (the civil wedding was held on April 1, 1810). In part: "In reiterating by these present words my felicitations of this happy event, I hope this marriage can contribute to your joint and perfect happiness. I take this opportunity to renew the assurance of my high consideration and unalterable friendship." On the second page of both bifoliums is the stamp of Dr. Max Thorek's autograph collection. All text and the signature are very clear and bold. Also included is the transmittal envelope with the red wax seal still intact (the original receiver cut around the seal to open the envelope).

By 1810, Alexander and Napoleon, who had together formed a Franco-Prussian alliance, distrusted each other. Napoleon, testing Alexander's loyalty, requested the hand of Alexander's youngest sister, Anna Pavlovna. Alexander politely refused, noting his sister's age, which was fifteen in 1810. Napoleon quickly turned to the Austrian Marie Louise, who was of a more mature age at nineteen years.
