[Mexican War]. Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed as a lieutenant. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", "On Board U.S. Transport North Carolina," March 5, 1847. With this letter, the future Union general transmits to Brigadier General George Gibson in Washington, D.C., his February 1847 Provision Return (not included). The letter reads, "General, I have the honor herewith to transmit my Provision Return and Vouchers for the Month of February 1847. I am Sir, very Respectfully Your Obt. Servt. [signed] US Grant 2 Lt. 2nd Infy. A.A.C.S." Grant spent most of his time during the Mexican War as a quartermaster, though he did lead a charge in 1846 at the Battle of Rasaca de la Palma under the command of Zachary Taylor. Days after transmitting this report, the lieutenant - now under the command of Winfield Scott -participated in the Siege of Veracruz. Docketed on the fourth page. Age-toned with some mat-burn around the edges. Smoothed folds with slight soiling. The ink is clear and bold. Mounting tape exists on the four corners of the back of the fourth page.
