    Description

[Mexican War] and [Battle of Vera Cruz]. Two Soldiers' Letters and One Engraving. Both are written from Veracruz on March 29, 1847, the day the Mexican city capitulated to the U.S. Army. The first is one and one-half pages to "Mother" in Massachusetts and signed "Wilkes" (possibly Wilkes Slocum). Wilkes writes that "The Americans took possession of the City & Castle today a week after the start of the siege in which they lost only 16 men while the Mexican loss was nearly 3000 an unexampled action." Postmark stamp from New Orleans and stamped "10," meaning the letter's destination was more than 3,000 miles away.

The second letter is two and one-half pages and is addressed to Mr. H. Wingate of Lexington, Indiana, the father of the author, Corporal B. Wingate. The corporal writes of general news about the fall of Veracruz and the prospects for the continuation of the war ("I am of the opinion that the Mexican wore is near to a close"). In part: "I trust that there is scarcely an American whos heart would not have leaped with joy this morning for to have seen the stars and stripes of proud America awaving in the breze after the city and castle of Veray Cruse." The Battle (Siege) of Veracruz lasted twenty days (March 9-29) and ended with the surrender of the Mexican seaport. When the Americans won, Veracruz became a landing for the American force under the command of Winfield Scott, which marched on to Mexico City. Both letters have folds and exhibit mostly minor staining and soiling. The engraving (10.5" x 7.25") features the "Siege of Vera Cruz" from "the original painting by Powell." Some soiling.
