[Mexican Revolution]. Venustiano Carranza Typed Letter Signed. One page on imprinted letterhead, 8.3" x 10.75". Saltillo; May 15, 1912. Written on letterhead imprinted (in Spanish) "Private Correspondence of the Governor of Coahuila" to Felix A. Sommerfeld in El Paso, with news of recent events during the Mexican Revolution: "I'll tell you the recent events of this past week, that have been a success of victories for the Forces of the Government, details of which you will already have, like the defeat suffered by Salazar's forces in Puerto del Carmen, inflicted in large part by forces from this State, and determined their violent flight to the North."

Sommerfeld was a German national trained in intelligence work. At the time of receiving this letter, Sommerfeld served as an advisor to then President Francisco Madero, while still reporting to Germany on Mexico as well as US policies in Mexico. After Madero's assassination, he worked all angles: providing services for various factions involved in the struggle for power in Mexico, collaborating with the United States Bureau of Investigation, and all the while reporting to Germany. In 1913, Carranza would send Sommerfeld across the border to Texas to secure weapons for his forces. The following year, Sommerfeld's alliance shifted to Pancho Villa, after Villa and Carranza split their alliance. The letter offered here documents the established relationship between Carranza and Sommerfeld, as well as Sommerfeld's potential ties in Texas.

Condition: Flattened fold, and gently toned. Rust stain from a paper clip at top.
