[Mexican Revolution]. Francisco Madero Typed Document Signed as President. One page on presidential imprinted letterhead, 8.5" x 11". Mexico, D.F.; April 17, 1912. Written during his brief tenure as president of Mexico, Madero directs the Minister of Finance to pay Ernesto Fernández y Arteaga five hundred pesos for his service to the Revolution as Diplomatic Agent in Washington. Madero had secured arms for his forces from the United States; although the American government did not publicly take sides in the struggle, they did nothing to prevent the flow of weapons into Mexico. The document offered here indicates that Madero had an agent making his argument in Washington.

Madero (1873-1922) helped incite the Mexican Revolution in 1910 and was elected president in 1911 by carrying 90% of the vote. His administration immediately faced opposition from both more radical forces as well as conservative remnants of the old administration. He was assassinated in 1913 after a successful coup by forces led by General Victoriano Huerta.
