"I had a brother and a sister born in Jamestown, but I was reserved for Missouri...S. L. Clemens"

[Mark Twain]. Samuel L. Clemens Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4.25" x 6.75" (sight), Paris, February 9, 1895. Clemens writes to a Mr. Morgan: "My suggestion is that you precede my letter with your own in the circular - or put mine first if you prefer - & see if anything will result, in these hard and doubtful times, these fearfully inauspicious times. I had a brother and a sister born in Jamestown, but I was reserved for Missouri...S. L. Clemens."

With usual flattened mail folds and a small ink smudge; paper remains bright and ink bold. Framed with a photograph of the writer and a name plate to an overall size of 20.13" x 20.88".

While in Paris in 1895, Clemens completed the "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc," a serialized work that was first published in Harper's Magazine in April 1895 and ran for thirteen months. Clemens had traveled to Europe in hopes of launching a tour of speaking engagements. Despite his great financial earnings as a writer, his poor business acumen had landed him in great debt; and he hoped the tour would provide the income needed to pay off all his creditors.
