    Description

[Louis Pasteur]. Dr. Émile Roux Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.25" x 8", "Laboratoire de M. Pasteur," April 21, 1884, to "M.[onsieur] Bourret." French physician Émile Roux (1853-1933) was a close collaborator with Louis Pasteur, working with him beginning in 1881 on a rabies vaccination while cofounding and directing the Pasteur Institute. The two scientists developed the vaccine in 1885 (prior to that vaccine, almost all human cases proved fatal). In this letter, Roux asks Bourret for a "mad dog" and the "body" of "the first dog," likely as specimens to help with their research on a rabies vaccine. Minor staining and soiling.

The letter reads, "We are asking for a mad dog again. We would be much obliged if you would please allow the first dog you have to die a natural death and send us the body as soon as possible. Accept, I beg of you, all our thanks and our best regards. [Signed] Dr. Roux."
