[Lizzie Borden] Nance O'Neil Original Photograph and Autograph Note Signed. The sepia photograph, 5.25" x 8.5", shows a strikingly tall Nance O'Neil theatrically wrapped in a silk cape. It bears the photographer's name "E. F. Foley, N.Y.". It is matted and framed (8" x 15.75" overall) with an autograph note, "Park Theater / pass three /3/ seats / Nance O'Neil". Light toning to the note, else fine.

Nance O'Neil was a well-known American stage star in the 1890s. She was memorable in her roles as Lady Macbeth, Hedda Gabler, and Camille. In 1897 Lizzie Borden, acquitted for the 1892 murder of her father and stepmother, met O'Neil on a trip to Boston. Borden scandalized proper society by hosting a lavish party at her Fall River, Massachusetts home for O'Neil. Immediately rumors began to swirl that Borden and O'Neil were lesbian lovers. O'Neil continued acting, despite the scandal, eventually signing with producer William Fox. She appeared in several motion pictures, including several talking films.
