    [John M. Allen] John Appleton Letter Signed as Chief Clerk of the U.S. Navy Department. One page, 7.75" x 10", August 20, 1845, "Navy Department", to Galveston's first mayor, J. M. Allen, concerning the pending appointment of D. L. Braim[?] to the U.S. Navy. Some minor ink blotches. Smoothed folds; near fine.

    More Information:

    Appleton's letter states that Mr. Allen's letter "has been filed with the testimonials in behalf of D. L. Braim. The number of midshipmen is limited by law, and there is now no vacancy in the corps. When circumstances shall permit an appointment to be made from Texas, the application of Mr. Braim will be respectfully considered."


    Texas Naval Captain John M. Allen (?-1847), a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Texas Revolution, had commanded the Texas privateer, the Terrible, which patrolled the Gulf following the revolution. When this letter was written, Allen was serving his last term as Galveston's first mayor.


    John Appleton, "Ch.[ief] Clerk", has signed for the secretary of the navy. Appleton served as Chief Clerk of the U.S. Navy Department from 1845 through 1858.
