[John James]. Governor George T. Wood Land Grant Signed. One partially-printed, vellum page, 14.5" x 12", Austin, June 22, 1849, granting to Texas Ranger "John James assignee of Santiago Peralis . . . Six hundred and forty acres of Land... In Bexar District . . . issued to said Peralis . . . on the 9th day of August 1847, and transfered [sic] to said James on the 30th day of May 1848." Countersigned by Texas Declaration of Independence signer George Washington Smyth (1803-1866) as commissioner of the General Land Office. Blind stamped Seals of the State of Texas and Land Office near lower edge. Folds. Light toning, especially along the edges and folds. Scattered spots of minor staining.

The English-born John James (1819-1877) came to Texas during the Texas Revolution, but arrived shortly after the war was over. James, a surveyor by trade, acted as deputy surveyor to John Coffee "Jack" Hays, a captain in the Texas Rangers who was also chief surveyor for Bexar County.
