[John H. Reagan]. Collection of Six Varina Davis Letters, two signed "Jefferson Davis" by Varina Davis. Four letters are signed "V. Jefferson Davis"; all are dated between 1888-1902. Five are addressed to Texan John Reagan, one thanking the judge for "all your affectionate defense of your loving friend my husband from the dastardly attacks make upon him both in life and death."

One letter signed by Mrs. Davis on behalf of Mr. Davis offers corrections on "errors in the Congressional Directory" concerning "the Capital extension", including a correction about a misunderstanding regarding "the goddess of Liberty" on top of "the Dome". According to the letter, the goddess had "a spear with a Liberty cap on it to this I [Jefferson Davis] objected because the liberty cap was the badge of the freedman & as our ancestors had never been slaves, I considered it inappropriate." (A "headdress of feathers" was substituted for the liberty cap.)

John Reagan, who served as postmaster general for the Confederacy and later represented Texas in the U.S. Senate, had been a faithful friend to the Confederacy's president and later proved a faithful friend to Mrs. Davis. Varina Howell Davis (1826-1906) was eighteen years younger than her husband. After his death in 1889, she invested much of her time defending his memory. Two letters are written on black-bordered mourning stationery. All letters are toned and in fine condition.
