Description

A remarkable letter written by the physician who tried to save JFK

[John F. Kennedy]. Malcolm Perry Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 6.75", Dallas, March 20, 1964, on Dr. Perry's professional letterhead containing his Dallas address. Dr. Perry, the first doctor at Dallas' Parkland Hospital to attend to the wounded President Kennedy when he arrived on November 22, 1963, writes to William Wright of New Hampshire about the care that he gave to President Kennedy. The doctor also makes a plea that "honor and dignity should attend any statements made as befits his position." Also included is the postmarked transmittal envelope. Both items are very clean.

The letter reads, "Your confusion is understandable since I have found press releases to be generally quite inaccurate. I cannot discuss with you any particulars about any patients care, but since it is common knowledge, I did a tracheostomy and thoracostomy [thoracotomy?] on the President, the latter for sealed-tube drainage. I appreciate your interest, but I think we should remember he was President, and honor and dignity should attend any statements made as befits his position. . . . [signed] Sincerely, Malcolm Perry M.D."

Dr. Malcolm Perry (1929-2009) also attended Texas Governor John Connally, who was also wounded. Ironically, Perry also cared for Lee Harvey Oswald after Jack Ruby shot him on November 24. To get away from the press, the doctor consequently moved away from Dallas.
