Description

[John F. Kennedy Assassination] Marguerite Oswald Autograph Letter and Autograph Note Signed. Each is penned on Mrs. Oswald's gold-bordered and imprinted note card stationery, 5" x 7.75", Fort Worth, Texas, dated November 22 and 24, 1967, and addressed to actresses Barbara Rush and Joanne Woodward, respectively. Trimmed portions of each transmittal envelope has been stapled to the letters, and each envelope bears the actress' name and the same address: "There is another mother for peace" in Beverly Hills.

Another Mother for Peace was founded in 1967 by a group of women strongly opposed to the war in Vietnam. Their mission was to create a non-partisan, non-profit organization "to educate women to take an active role in eliminating war as a means of solving disputes between nations, people and ideologies." Film and television celebrities including Donna Reed, Debbie Reynolds, Patty Duke, Barbara Rush, Mercedes McCambridge, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Dick Van Dyke appeared on national television to promote AMP causes. The organization's vision was embodied in its instantly recognizable logo - a sunflower with the words "War is not healthy for children and other living things."

With these messages, Mrs. Oswald attempted to defend her son, Lee Harvey, and apparently hoped the organization would support her in that endeavor. Mrs. Oswald's letter to Joanne Woodward reads, in full: "Lee was just seventeen when he joined the Marines. Later in life, tho still a very young man he was picked up as a suspect and while publicly proclaiming his innocence (loudly to the American people via T.V.) he was brutally executed, thereby dening [sic] him a chance in his own defence [sic] of innocent. What happened to my son could, of course, happen to any 'Mother's son.'; It is not to [sic] late to help me in my endeavor [sic] to find the truth about those fateful days in Dallas. True, a President was killed and one would be unworthy of existence if he was not appalled by it. However, the killing of my son (a nobody?) seems to be overlooked. Yet that killing is what should alarm America. There can be no peace until the truth is told, and many more killings such as young men going to war will continue. This I believe - Marguerite C. Oswald."

The note to Barbara Rush contains a simple statement: "There can be no peace until the truth about 'The Tragedy in Dallas' is told to the American People. Marguerite C. Oswald." Each letter is postmarked Fort Worth, November 18, 1967, but the letters themselves are post dated; Rush's letter is dated November 22, and Woodward's is dated November 24 - four years to the day that Lee Harvey Oswald was executed for assassinating President John F. Kennedy. Minor toning.
