[Jesse James?]: An 1879 Note Purported to Be in His Hand. The James brothers made wide use of aliases in their efforts to avoid the law. This laminated penny postcard appears to deal with missing stock, but is so hurriedly scrawled as to be very hard to decipher. It is accompanied by a notarized affidavit from one Richard L. Mach who describes his 1972 acquisition, but offers no further provenance. The signature does not appear to be that of one of the James's 70+ known aliases and the hurried handwriting, while bearing some resemblance to known examples of James's, is by no means a clear match. We leave it to our bidders to evaluate this item and determine its authenticity. Clearly if it is indeed written by Jesse James, it would be worth many multiples of the opening bid.
