    [Jefferson Davis] Subpoena to Appear at Davis' Trial, with envelope. One partly-printed sheet (with content on recto and verso), 7" x 8.5", Richmond, Virginia, November 22, 1867. This subpoena was issued to "the Marshal of the District of Virginia . . . We command you to summon B. Wells of the City of Washington . . . before our Judges of our Court of the United States for the District of Virginia, at the next new term thereof, to be holden at Richmond, in the District aforesaid, on the 25th day of Nov. 1867 to testify all and singular what he may know in a certain cause n the said Court depending and undetermined, wherein The United Stated of America, an Plaintiff, and Jefferson Davis Defendant, in behalf of said United States." Signed by Clerk W. H. Zarry. Following the conclusion of the Civil War, Confederate ex-President Davis was initially held as a suspect in the assassination of President Lincoln. Davis was later charged with treason, but he, along with all persons who had participated in the Southern rebellion, were pardoned by President Johnson's amnesty proclamation of December 25, 1868. This subpoena has a blind-embossed seal in the lower left corner of the District of Virginia's circuit court. Minor separation at folds. Toned paper. The toned envelope reads, "Subpoena to appear before the United States District Court at Richmond."
