[James Pinckney Henderson]. James R. Dodge Autograph Letter of Introduction Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 7.75" x 9.75", Moyanton [?], November 25, 1854. Henderson was practicing law in San Augustine, Texas, when he received this letter of introduction from James Dodge introducing Samuel Tate "who is about selling in your State. He is a valued friend of mine and worthy of every attention you can give him." Folds; else fine.

James Pinckney Henderson (1808-1858) served as a brigadier general in the Texan Army before becoming the state's first governor. During his administration, the U.S. went to war with Mexico and Henderson received permission from the Texas legislature to lead troops in the field. He commanded the Second Texas Regiment at the Battle of Monterrey and was commissioned a major general in the U.S. Army in charge of Texas forces for the duration of the war. He returned to Texas and finished out his term as governor, but declined to run for a second. In 1857, after the death of U.S. Senator Thomas J. Rusk, Henderson was elected by the Texas State Legislature and remained until his own death the following year.
