Description[James Garfield]. Charles J. Guiteau Signature with a Copy of "A Lecture on Christ's Second Coming: A.D. 70." The bold signature of Guiteau, the assassin of President James Garfield, is found on a 3.75" x 1.5" of ruled paper. With the signature is a copy of Guiteau's lecture, "A Lecture of Christ's Second Coming," twenty-four pages, 5.75" x 9", published in Albany, New York, by Weed, Parsons and Company in 1877. Printed wraps; the lower half of the front cover is separating along the spine.
Before his assassination of Garfield, Guiteau (1841-1882) had been a member of the Oneida Community, a religious commune who believed that Jesus' second coming had occurred in 70 A.D. Following a failed career as a lawyer, he turned to theology, publishing a book called, The Truth, based on the theology of the Oneida Community and mostly plagiarized from its founder, John Humphrey Noyes. He became a wandering preacher, giving lectures (such as the one included here) to anyone who would listen to him. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
