[Governor Oliver Morton]. Anonymous Autograph Note Signed "A Miscegin" on an Indiana Recruitment Circular. One page of a bifolium, 5" x 8", no place, circa 1864. Governor Morton had a close relationship with President Lincoln, and was known as one of his "war governors". Morton was known for his dedication to the Union war effort, and his successful, albeit sometimes ruthless, recruitment strategies. He often faced backlash from political rivals for his methods used to raise volunteers and money, but many soldiers rallied behind him as he kept them well-equipped and supported in the field. However, after Morton's 1864 call for further volunteers, some Indiana natives became enraged at the prospect of giving more to a seemingly un-ending war. This incredibly angry response to Morton's call for 20,000 recruits from the state of Indiana, which was mailed to Morton, reads in full:

"Kiss my ASS (with a drawing of a donkey) you God damned leather assed son of a bitch. You have already murdered one half of the white population to free the damned stinking 'nigger' I would see you so far in hell that the blaze of your burning carcass would not make a smell before I would give one cent to carry on your god damned crusade, or I would see your skinned and your damned hide filled with shit before I would be one of the 20,000."

Also included are a patriotic cover, 5.25" x 3.25", dated August 13 and addressed to Governor Morton, and a carte de visite of Morton. The carte de visite, 2.5" x 4.25", was produced at Brady's National Photographic Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Condition: The circular has usual mail folds, with some small areas of soiling throughout. The transmittal cover has usual signs of wear, but is in very good condition with the address being bold and legible. The CDV is lightly toned with some small areas of soiling.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
