[Gettysburg] and [140th New York]. 2nd Lieutenant Porter Farley Archive of Military Commissions, Along with the Items of the Count of Paris: Three Letters and a Cabinet Card, with additional correspondence to Farley. Porter Farley was commissioned into the 140th New York Infantry, Co. "G", in 1862. This archive contains four of his military appointments, appointing him a captain, a quarter master 1st lieutenant, a 1st lieutenant, and a 2nd lieutenant, all while he served in the 140th New York Regiment. The three letters from the Count of Paris are dated November 22, 1877, January 24, 1878, and April 20, 1878, discussing the campaigns of the 140th New York Volunteers, particularly the regiment's actions at Gettysburg. The cabinet card features an older Prince Philippe, Count of Paris, who volunteered as a Union officer during the American Civil War. He served as an assistant adjutant general with the rank of captain. Two letters from William S. Grantsyne to Farley are included, both dated 1899, concerning their time in the army. (Grantsyne served as a captain in the 140th.) The following are also included: photograph postcard featuring a group of veterans with Farley; a printed explanation of officer decorations; two newspaper clippings about the death of the Count. The 140th saw action at the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville before fighting at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. The regiment's defensive and offensive actions at Little Round Top came at a great cost of over 130 casualties. This archive has been well cared for.
