[German Emigration Company] Hermann
    Spiess Signed Land Grant.
Two pages of a bifolium, with a plat map on page three, 8.5" x 10.5". "County Comal", October 1, 1848. A manuscript grant initially drafted during John O. Meusebach's tenure as head of the German Emigration Company, issued to Julius Völker "for the grant on the waters of the Llano & San Saba." Signed, "H Spiess Trustee of the G Emigration ... of J.O. Meusebach." A plat map showing Völker's land as situated alongside other surveys is on the facing page. Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels appointed Spiess as Meusebach's replacement to oversee the colonization of his grant, and this document captures the transition from one commissioner to the other.
Condition: Even toning, with a few spots of foxing. Tiny chips occurring at the margins and at folds. An ink stain appears on the first page, with traces of a fingerprint.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
