[George McClellan] Charles G. Halpine Post-War Autograph Letter Signed Regarding the 1868 Presidential Election. Eight pages, 5" x 8.25", on "Register's Office/Hall of Records/City and County of New York" letterhead, New York, September 16, 1867. Halpine, a former Union general, discusses the political situation at the time and the possibility of General George B. McClellan becoming the next president. He says in part:

"You remember my prediction about Seymour's carrying New York, how it was laughed at: but how it came true...Now hear this: the Radicals [Republicans] will lose New York this year...having carried it last year for Fenton...There may not be an increase to any large amount in the Demc. Vote, but thousands upon thousands of Radicals will take no part in the election...disgusted with recent extreme legislation...If so, the next President will not be a Conservative but a Democrat; and how would you like to have George B. McClellan for President? You may laugh: but I tell you it is 'in the cards,' and cards very sure & easily played too."

After his unsuccessful bid for president against Lincoln in 1864, the Democratic Party had expressed interest in nominating McClellan again for the 1868 election. When it was confirmed that Ulysses S. Grant was the Republican nominee for president, the idea was scrapped.

Letter is heavily stained throughout, but the text is still clear and legible.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
