(French and Indian War) Manuscript Document, two pages, 7.5" x 12", Philadelphia, September 9, 1761, with a lengthy endorsement signed by Philadelphia Mayor Benjamin Shoemaker approving a series of claims filed by Alexander McKermet. "...Relating to the Losses he sustain'd [sic] by the Incroachment [sic] of the French on the river Ohio in the Year of our Lord 1753 & 1754..." The document lists the claims which are primarily listed by individuals, many of whom appear to be Indians including "...Tassalauhervau...The Half King & his Wife...Delaware George...The Crow...The Half Kings Daughter..." Other names include "...Capt. Jacob... Thames Hickman... John Hickman...French Margaret's Daughter..." McKermet was likely an English fur trader who was forced out of the upper Ohio Valley when a French expedition moved into the region to assert France's control over the area -- thus touching off the Seven Years (French and Indian) War. Judging from the names on the list, McKermet lived in a mixed community of English, French and Indians. Also interesting here is the presence of a "Half King," an Iroquois representative or diplomat who asserted the Confederation's authority in the Ohio Valley. The total losses amounted to £78-0-0. Mayor Shoemaker of Philadelphia signs at the bottom of the second page attesting to the accuracy of the account. Chipping to margins with the loss of a few words of text, usual folds, otherwise very good condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
