    Description

    [French and Indian War]. Israel Putnam Document Signed. One page, 7.25" x 12.25", Hartford; March 23, 1759. A bond certifying that Putnam will serve as a Paymaster during the upcoming engagements in the French and Indian War and is "firmly bound to the Governor and Company of his Majesties." It reads in part: "...the condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said Israel Putnam is and has undertaken to act as Paymaster to a certain Company of Foot Souldiers [sic] to be raised for his Majesties Service the ensuing Campain [sic] and in the Pay of this Government..." The campaign mentioned was the expedition against Ticonderoga under the command of Jeffrey Amherst. The document is also countersigned by Joseph Spencer, Colonel Nathan Whiting, and Colonel Eleazer Fitch.

    Condition: Three closed tears and two small holes have been professionally reinforced on verso with archival tape. One small hole at bottom edge from seal. Very lightly soiled and toned.
