[Fort Sumter.] Quincy A. Gillmore Autograph Letter Signed
"Q.A. Gillmore." One page, 5" x 7", Fort Sumter, South Carolina; February 28, 1865. A short letter, addressed to an unknown recipient, concerning General Anderson's invitation to the flag-raising ceremony at Fort Sumter. It reads:

"In reply to your note of the 22nd I am happy to be able to state, that Major General Robert Anderson has been invited by me to bring down the flag which he so gallantly defended in 1861, and hoist it over the ruins of Fort Sumter. The affair will be conducted with some ceremony, and, doubtless with considerable [illegible]; and it would afford me great pleasure to see you present on that occasion."

Robert Anderson (1805-1871) was in command at Fort Sumter and was forced to surrender following the Confederate's bombardment of the fort in April 1861. The fort was finally recaptured by the Union on February 22, 1865. After Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Anderson was invited to raise the American flag at Fort Sumter once more. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Flattened folds. The left and top edge are uneven. Chipping along the vertical edge, with some adhesive residue at the edge. Small soiling spot at the lower right corner. Else good.
