    Description

[Fort Inge, Texas] Russell Varnell Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address on the verso, 8" x 9.75", Fort Inge, Texas, May 19, 1857. A few small holes at the folds, else, near very fine. An interesting letter in which Varnell writes to John Rich in Eagle Pass, Texas, "I bought 5 head of animals. . .to take to Eastern Texas. . .To day [sic] some Mexicans have come to me and say they are stolen horses." Even though Varnell believed the horses could not be recovered under Texas law, he did "not approve of giving any encouragement to thieves." Fort Inge was a part of the first federal line of frontier forts in Texas. It was to serve as a base of operations for army troops and Texas militia. The missions of the soldiers included security patrols for the construction of the San Antonio-El Paso military road, escorts for supply trains and mail, protection for frontier settlements from bandits and Indian raiders, and guarding the international boundary with Mexico. The fort was a typical one-company, fifty-man post for most of its history. Fort Inge was closed for federal service on March 19, 1869. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
