    Description

"Diamond Dick" Tanner: A Great Two-page Handwritten Letter to Smith & Wesson. "Diamond Dick" was one of the best known crack shots and performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1925 he writes to Smith & Wesson to reference the pair of elaborately engraved revolvers the company presented to him in 1896, "I used them in every one of my exhibitions for years," he writes. "I have a collection of firearms presented to me by the leading gun-makers of the world, and I am still of the opinion that Smith & Wesson six-shooters are the fastest and most accurate of any make on earth." While Tanner does not come right out and say it, he is clearly angling for an invitation to make a (lucrative) endorsement of Smith & Wesson, but to our knowledge, no such offer was forthcoming. Pencil writing on upper right-hand corner of the letter appears to be directed at Tanner from someone at Smith & Wesson, so presumably his letter was mailed back to him with these comments or sentiment. Unfortunately, three handwriting specialists in our Manuscript department have been totally unable to decipher the message! Also included in the lot is a vintage photo of Diamond Dick, with his typical neatly lettered inscription and autograph on verso.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
