[Civil War]. William T. Sherman War-Dated Autograph Endorsement Signed. Found on page four of a two page autograph letter twice signed by Brig. Gen. David Stuart, 7.75" x 9.75", "Head Quarters 2 Div. 15 A.C.," February 28, 1863. In this letter, sent to Maj. J. H. Hammond, assistant adjutant general, Gen. Stuart complains that "the only drainage of this encampment is . . . a ditch which passes along by & in front of the Camp of the 25 Iowa" which has "twice before been obstructed with filth, offal &c carelessly thrown in." He goes on to comment that the water in the ditch began to rise as the men of the 25th Iowa were filling in the ditch due to a broken bridge. After sending a "polite note to the 'Comd. Officer' of the Regt.," he received no answer and requests that an order be issued "to the Comd Officer of that Regt. to open the ditch immediately." Sherman received the letter the following day and wrote: "officer of the Day will inquire into this and give the necessary order in my name. [signed] W.T. Sherman Maj Gen Comd Rec'd March 1 / 63." Very slight separation at the right edge of the upper horizontal fold, else fine.
