[Civil War] Brigadier General Thomas Francis Meagher, Commander of the "Fighting 69th Irish Brigade, Appointment Document Endorsed "Thomas Francis Meagher". One page on lined paper, 8" x 10", "Irish Brigade Office", New York, January 17, 1863. Fine. Prior to the Civil War Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867) devoted much of his young life to the cause of Irish nationalism. After immigrating to the United States in 1852 (following trials and travails too numerous to document here) he studied law and journalism. Once the war started Meagher volunteered to fight for the Union (though he had expressed support for the South) and participated in the First Battle of Bull Run. Following the battle Meagher returned to New York and formed the Irish Brigade. The "Fighting 69th" participated in many major battles, and though not always victorious, they earned a reputation as fierce fighters. This appointment document reads, in part: "Lieut. John Dillon Mulhall, late of the Irish Papal Brigade, has been appointed by me as First Lieut. In the Sixty-Ninth Regt. N.Y. Vols., vice Birmingham killed at battle of Fredericksburg...". The document is signed "Robert Nugent/ Col. 69 Regt. N.Y.V.". Col. Nugent was himself wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg and was brevetted Brigadier General at the war's end. The verso is endorsed "New York/ 129 Fifth Ave./ Jan - 17th 1865/ Fully and most/ cordially approved/ by the undersigned/ Thomas Francis Meagher/ Brigadier General/ Commanding the/ Irish Brigade". A superb document with several excellent associations with the famous Irish Brigade.
